Excitability of the mammalian ventricle throughout the cardiac cycle.

چکیده
T HE concept that there is an excitability cycle of the heart containing an absolute refractory period, a relative refractory period and a somewhat longer interval of normal excitability had its origin in the work of Fontana, Bowditch, Kronecker, Marey and others (I). A period of supernormality following the relative refractory period was found to occur under certain conditions (2-5) and it has been suggested that there may be a subsequent subnormal period (6). Measurements both of the basal excitability and the phasic changes in excitability have been made on numerous occasions. The generally accepted conclusion is that recovery of excitability throughout the relative refractory period is a smoothly progressive process (7). Recent work (8, g), however, has indicated otherwise. This report is an account of results obtained from a study of the excitability cycle of the mammalian ventricle by means of improved techniques.

Echocardiographic Assessment of Left Ventricle Torsion by Tissue Doppler and Velocity Vector Imaging
Introduction Left ventricular (LV) twist is believed to store potential energy and plays an important role in generating diastolic suction. Recent advances in echocardiography techniques have allowed quantification of LV twist. The aim of the present study was to compare LV twist and torsion in healthy human subjects determined by velocity vector imaging (VVI) and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) a...
متن کاملThe volume-dependency of parallel conductance throughout the cardiac cycle and its consequence for volume estimation of the left ventricle in patients.
OBJECTIVE To study the hypothesis that the electrical conductance of tissues and fluids (parallel conductance (G(p))) around the ventricle depends on left ventricular volume throughout the cardiac cycle. METHODS We extended a recently developed method to determine G(p) throughout the cardiac cycle. First, we compared the estimates of parallel conductances obtained with the new method (G(a)(p)...
متن کاملReducing the respiratory motion artifacts in PET cardiology: A simulation study
Introduction: There are several technical features that make PET an ideal device for the noninvasive evaluation of cardiac physiology. Organ motion due to respiration is a major challenge in diagnostic imaging, especially in cardiac PET imaging. These motions reduce image quality by spreading the radiotracer activity over an increased volume, distorting apparent les...
متن کاملThe Supernormal Period in the Mammalian Ventricle1
Exploration of the excitability during recovery from previous response of various nerve and muscle preparations has revealed a period of heightened excitability following the relatively refractory period. Since the threshold at this time is found to be lower than subsequently or at rest, this phase has been designated as the supernormal period. This period of enhanced excitability may exist nor...
متن کاملThe excitability cycle of the dog's left ventricle determined by anodal, cathodal, and bipolar stimulation.
Investigations are reported in which the excitability cycle of the dog's heart was tested successively by unipolar anodal and cathodal square wave shocks as well as by bipolar stimulation. The classical view that excitability decreases smoothly during the relative refractory phase was substantiated. The excitability for anodal stimulation reached its maximum of the cardiac cycle immediately aft...
